What is remote work?

Remote work is work that can be done from anywhere in the world. There are plenty of working remotely pros and cons, but it’s up to you to decide which ones matter most to you.

Commutes are swapped for working from home, co-working spaces, cafes, or sometimes even traveling around the world as a digital nomad.

Offices are swapped for virtual ones, such as Slack, Asana, and Notion.

And instead of being limited to the number of people who can easily travel to your business, one of the benefits of working remotely is that remote companies are made up of people from every corner of the globe.

How to start working remotely

You need very little to start working remotely. Most remote work can be done with nothing but a laptop, but some people might also need to invest in software or other online tools.

These are the simple steps you need to take to start working remotely:

  1. Decide what skills you have to offer. You can base this on your previous jobs, education, interests, or unique skills, or if you’re stuck for ideas then look at some of the best work from home jobs.
  2. If you’re happy to go down the freelancing route (easier entry point, more freedom) create a profile on the best remote working sites, such as Upwork, Fiverr, People Per Hour, and Freelancer. Or, if you’re looking for the benefits of a physical job (healthcare, holiday, and sick pay) check out Dynamite Jobs and LinkedIn.
  3. Connect with businesses and employers to who you can offer your services and enjoy the many benefits of working remotely. Whether you choose to use your freedom to travel the world or focus on growing yourself where you are, remote working can change your quality of life for the better.

More remote work tips

Now you know how to secure a remote gig, but what is much more important is how to keep it and succeed while working remotely.

Just like any physical job, you need to show dedication, trust, and loyalty to your remote workplace – they’re putting a lot of trust in you by allowing you to work from wherever you please.

Try the following tips to make sure you can be a successful remote worker.

Optimize your work environment

This is one of the most important remote work tips.

While it may be tempting to work from your sofa, or even your bed, when you first start working remotely, this will quickly result in low productivity and poor mental health.

It’s essential that you create a dedicated workspace for yourself, even if you don’t have the space for a fully kitted-out office right away. A fold-out desk or corner of the room that’s quiet, well lit, and free from distraction will help you stay focussed during your working hours.

Create work-life boundaries

One of the greatest benefits of working remotely is being able to fit your life around your work. Having the freedom to fit in a mid-day workout or finish your last few tasks in your favorite coffee shop can give you a much more balanced life than your typical 9-5 in the office would.

However, if you’re not careful you can easily swap your 9-5 for a 24/7.

When your home becomes your workspace it’s hard to know when to switch off at all. Whether it’s squeezing in extra projects into evenings and weekends or responding to emails on holiday, even the best jobs can become overwhelming when there is no clear finish time.

  • Set and stick to strict working hours and agree on these with your team ahead of time.
  • Schedule holidays and breaks. This will help you avoid burnout and feel more productive while you’re working.
  • Account for all working hours. When you enjoy your work, it can be easy to find yourself doing it for free. As a general rule, if you wouldn’t be doing this task for fun, then you need to be getting paid for it.
